Juneau-Douglas High School cross-country running - Juneau Invitational: See the top high school runners in Southeast Alaska. Girls start at noon, boys at 12:45 p.m., with both five-kilometer races taking place at the Treadwell Mine Trails course at Sandy Beach.
Southeast Road Runners club - Seventh Annual Prostate Cancer Run/Walk: Meet at 7 a.m. at Mendenhall River Elementary School for 8 a.m. race start. This race is for men only and promotes education, awareness and prevention of prostate cancer. Courses are five-kilometer run and a two-mile walk. Entry fees are $12 for adults and $8 for boys age 12-younger. This race is held in conjunction with the "Beat the Odds" breast cancer run for women. Entry fees are $18 for adults and $14 for girls age 13-younger, with long-sleeved shirts going to the first 600 entered in the race. Mount Jumbo Gym rentals - The Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation will take reservations for rentals of the Mount Jumbo Gymnasium starting on Monday, Aug. 12. The gym is open for rentals beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 3. The cost is $27 per hour. The Mount Jumbo Gym is also open for preschool open gyms starting on Tuesday, Sept. 3. Preschool open gyms take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and they are open for children age 6 and younger. The preschool open gyms are free and parents need to stay at the gym with their children at all times. The Terry Miller Gym is currently open and available for rent. Gastineau Channel Little League equipment return - All team managers and coaches who haven't already turned in their team baseball and softball gear need to do so at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, at the GCLL equipment locker located at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park. Juneau Youth Football League parents' meetings - All parents of JYFL football players and cheerleaders need to attend one of two mandatory meetings, which will take place at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29, and at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5, both at the Riverbend Elementary School Commons. These meetings will give parents a chance to ask questions about the league, get game schedules, give input to the JYFL Board and find out what's in store for your kids this season. Juneau Rifle and Pistol Club - The parking lot of the Hank Harmon Rifle Range, Mile 1.5 Montana Creek Road, will have temporary closures over the two weeks starting on Thursday, Aug. 15, for paving. Friday youth open gyms at Floyd Dryden Middle School are on hiatus until the school year starts again in the fall. Youth open gyms are free for students in grades 5-12.
