Helping Hands will hold a dinner and auction this Saturday to raise money to support their community food bank. The fundraiser will take place Saturday, Aug. 29 at the Valley Chapel at 9741 Mendenhall Loop Road. Dinner begins at 5 p.m., and the auction starts at 6 p.m. A $10 donation is requested.
Helping Hands distributes food to about 400 people a week, said the organization's director, Karen Fortwengler. Anyone in need of food can come to the warehouse during open hours to pick up groceries. There are no forms to fill out, and no questions asked. The organization is a member of United Way, and relies on donations from local grocery stores and individuals to stock its shelves.
Helping Hands founder Betty Kaplor will be cooking all the food for the fundraiser. Local businesses and individuals have donated dozens of auction items, including whale baleen, zipline tours, and trips to Haines, Skagway and Elfin Cove.
