PALMER - The Alaska State Fair starts today and it opens with the comeback of Ken Peltier.
The local country music singer headlines the first night at the Borealis Theater four months after his last round of chemotherapy and radiation treatment for head and neck cancer.
Peltier was diagnosed with the disease in December. He had both tonsils and 47 lymph nodes removed, leaving him with a scar from the base of his jaw down the left side of his neck and across his upper chest. Then came the radiation and chemotherapy that left him weak, nauseous and 35 pounds lighter.
Besides the opening-night performance, Peltier says he will play free shows in the beer tent throughout the fair to say thanks to the many people who have helped during his fight.
