Knowles' legacy

Posted: Tuesday, August 28, 2001

Since statehood, every Alaska governor has sworn to "support and defend the constitution of the State of Alaska." Only one man, Tony Knowles, has knowingly broken that solemn pledge for plainly political reasons. His refusal to support and defend the sovereign interest of the state of Alaska in the so-called Katie John case is tantamount to giving "aid and comfort" to those enemies of the state who oppose the "equal rights, opportunities, and protection" of the Alaska Constitution.

Tony Knowles will be remembered for two things: a bike path and the calculated violation of his oath of office.
