Hunters can help

Posted: Wednesday, August 28, 2002

How many others noticed in last Tuesday's paper that the article about a New York bear killing an infant was on the page next to the first of the Letters to the Editor to save the "white" bear? This New York community had gotten used to black bears in their bird feeders, dog food and trash, yet hadn't considered them a danger. Hello!

I appreciate the several references to bear season opening Sept. 1 in the "white" bear articles. I hope that local hunters will help with our community's recent bear population explosion so that these beautiful animals will not have to be wasted by JPD and ADF&G. I am concerned that someone's kindergartner or a hiker will be our wake up call.
