Juneau firefighters responded to a fire alarm at about 4 a.m. at 9131 Glacier Highway and found white smoke in half the building, according to Fire Training Officer John George. They entered through the rear of the building and found that a sprinkler had contained the blaze to one shop.
Damage was estimated at $5,000 to the building and $20,000 to $50,000 in smoke and water damage to contents that included books and clothes.
"I truly believe that the sprinkler system in this building held the fire in check until our fire crews were able to access the fire and finish extinguishing it," George said. "With the open nature of this building, had there not been a sprinkler system, the fire would have spread rapidly."
Friends of the Library Bookstore in the center will be closed Tuesday to clean up after the recent fire. The bookstore offers secondhand books with proceeds going to the Juneau Public Libraries.
