I am writing to congratulate the Juneau School Board, the administrative staff and all the teachers of the Juneau School District on the opening of Thunder Mountain High School. Getting here has not been easy.
As a community, we tend to by myopic when pushed beyond our comfort zone. The idea of a new school was fine as long as it was a repeat of what we have had since 1955. To come up with a vision of what was needed at the beginning of the 21st century has, at times, been tough.
We have hardly been shy about voicing our objections, and those directly or indirectly involved with the project have taken heat for everything from size of classes to over-budget construction costs.
This week, let us hope all that is behind us, as the ribbon was cut Tuesday and students will arrive on the first day of class, making history both personally and for Juneau.
Good luck and happy trails to students, teachers and staff. As Pogo said, and I paraphrase, "We have seen the future and it is us!"
