Photos: Lunch hour poetry fix

Posted: Sunday, August 29, 2010

Christy Eriksen drafts a haiku verse in preparation to type the finished piece for a customer during Friday's lunch hour on Seward St. She plans to continue the activity every Wednesday at her post outside of The Canvas Community Art Studio and Gallery. Haiku will be available on a pay-as-you-can basis with a suggested donation of $5.75. Part of the proceeds will be donated to The Canvas and part will go toward an upcoming Poetry Slam that Eriksen is co-organizing. Originally a spoken word poet, Eriksen said she enjoys the limitations of haiku. "I used to dismiss it as an easy, boring type of poetry but have since fallen in love with it because of its difficulty," Eriksen said in an e-mail. "With only 17 syllables one must be very clear about what they're writing, cause there's no time for fluff."
