On Aug. 26, 1960, Malcolm A. Menzies married Elaine M. Moser in Washington, D.C., just one day after Mal was discharged from the United States Army. Elaine thought Mal was joking when he said they would live in Alaska. From their marriage date until 1963, they lived in Chicago, Ill. while Mal attended college and worked seasonally for the Bureau of Public Roads in Southeast and Interior Alaska. Elaine worked as a nurse for Blue Cross Blue Shield. In 1963, Malcolm and Elaine moved to Juneau, which has been their home ever since, except for short, work-related residencies in Petersburg, Ketchikan and Fairbanks.
The couple celebrated their 50th anniversary on the weekend of Aug. 20 at the Alyeska Resort in Girdwood with their children: Scot, wife Rita and twin sons Duncan and Chandler and Shane (nicknamed Archie by Mal) of Ketchikan; RobRoy and daughters Kelsey and Jordie of Eagle River; and daughter Holly of Tacoma, Wash.
