ANCHORAGE - A 25-year-old man convicted of assault and attempted sexual assault in Anchorage has been sentenced to 44 years in prison.
Assistant District Attorney Brittany Dunlop says Michael Nyako in July 2008 attacked a woman from behind as she jogged on the popular Westchester Lagoon trail.
Dunlop says Nyako dragged the woman to tall grass, held her down on her back, put his hand over her mouth, called her a derogatory name and licked her face.
The victim fought back and suffered fractured ribs, a broken clavicle and a punctured lung.
When a witness passed by, Nyako fled. The woman and bystanders chased the man until police arrived.
Superior Court Judge Michael Spaan says Nyako demonstrated a lack of remorse and his potential for rehabilitation was extremely guarded.
