Awards, honors and graduates

Rebecca Blasco of Juneau has been named to the dean's list at Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., for the spring semester.

Aksel Arnesen of Juneau is a recipient of a $1,000 USAA Educational Foundation 2000 Scholarship. Arnesen was selected from a pool of 9,000 applicants; he will attend the University of British Columbia in Vancouver this fall.

Captain John Cooper has been selected as the Army Transportation Officer of the Year by the United States Army. At the time of the nomination, he was assigned as the Maintenance Officer for the 180th Transportation Battalion located at Fort Hood, Texas. Cooper, the son of former Juneau resident Margery Meyer, is currently serving as operations officer for the Army Forces Central Command in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Aaron Clemens, a 1997 graduate of Juneau-Douglas High School, was recently named editor-in-chief of the Rebel Yell student newspaper at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He was also selected for the eighth annual Albert Finkelstein Memorial Study Mission, where he will travel with about 20 other college newspaper editors to Israel, Poland and Bulgaria in August. They will meet with officials, local media and community leaders.

 

Amberly Ann Brown, a 1994 graduate of Sitka High School, graduated from the University of Hawaii-Manoa in Honolulu with a bachelor of science degree in health science.

Jessica Rehfield of Juneau was one of 150 participants in the Rising Star program at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga. The program is a five-week summer camp open to students who have completed their junior year of high school and are interested in studying or a career in the arts.

Brent Vollenweider has been awarded a $7,000 scholarship from the Semester at Sea Program to study architectural engineering at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo.

Tanna Peters, a 1998 graduate of JDHS, has been awarded a $2,500 University Scholar Assistantship for the 2000-2001 school year at Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Wash. The award consists of a $500 scholarship and a work-study position in her area of academic interest.

Kristy Martin of Ward Cove was named to the dean's list at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colo., for the 1999-2000 academic year.
