New police captain named

JUNEAU - The Juneau Police Department has picked a Texas law enforcement veteran to fill its captain of operations position.

Thomas Porter Jr. of Amarillo, Texas, has18 years of law enforcement experience. Most recently, he has been in charge of the Amarillo Police Department's Crime Prevention Unit, where he demonstrated a strong commitment to community involvement a commitment he defined at a public forum held in Juneau earlier this month.

Other experience and training includes work as a hostage negotiator, SWAT team supervisor, firearms instructor and major case investigator. Porter holds an associate degree in law enforcement from Amarillo College.

Porter will be sworn in Sept. 25. He will oversee the Patrol, Community Service and Investigations divisions of the police department.
