We've become a police state. Everywhere I turn there are people in uniforms and badges. Crime doesn't seem to be out of control. Spend the money on Eaglecrest.
Every time we try to report things that are suspicious, illegal or destructive, the police dispatcher pretty much tells us they are undermanned. The cops have told us the same thing, so they can't get to looking into it for a while - or not at all if no one is in immediate danger. That tells me we must need a larger force if they can't keep up with things.
We need a police officer dedicated to traffic law enforcement, i.e. studded tires, out-of-state tags, etc. Ticket money generated would fund junked car disposal as well as fund the extra police position.
On a good shift, Juneau has six officers protecting more than 30,000 people. When a domestic violence call comes in, at least two officers are required to respond. One DUI arrest takes an officer off the road for about three hours. Alarmingly, outdoor underage drinking gatherings have numbered in the hundreds. How can we expect half a dozen officers to deal with a party of that size? A person is most likely a detriment to our community or naive about local criminal facts to claim Juneau has enough law enforcement protection.
Tons of community service opportunities are not being met because of too few officers to go around. It would be helpful to the community if there were enough officers on duty to be able to be proactive instead of reactive to situations. How could anyone say no to this?
I think we need more cops on the road so they can take action to pull those drivers who speed, cut people off, or make illegal U-turns.
Juneau doesn't need more cops! We just need the ones we have to do their job. This police department more closely resembles the Keystone Cops of the Buster Keaton era than an actual police force. Oh yeah, they brag about their community presence, but that's all it is ... a presence! A do-nothing, rag-tag group of donut eaters.
