JUNEAU - Police found a marijuana growing operation after responding to a domestic disturbance Saturday in the Fritz Cove area.

James Smith, 49, was arrested and charged with three counts of domestic violence assault, one count of domestic violence harassment and one count of misconduct involving weapons after police arrived at the residence and witnessed him holding a small caliber handgun that he tossed into the house.

A drug charge is pending, police said.

Police responded to the call on Dock Street at about 7:15 p.m. Upon entering the home with Smith's permission to secure the weapon, they found two large dogs, police said.

Gastineau Human Society was called for assistance, and as officers tried to take control of the dogs, police said the pot was found in a bedroom. Police estimated the amount at more than 4 ounces.

A search warrant was obtained and the pot seized, police said.

Smith was held at the Lemon Creek Correctional Center without bail.
