More than 80 graduate students and faculty from around the country have completed classes at the Bread Loaf School of English summer program at the University of Alaska Southeast Juneau campus. This is the fourth year of the program.
"We can't wait to come back," said Dr. Lucy Maddox, who is director of the Juneau campus Bread Loaf program. "I think we'll have our largest student body next year. A lot of people are eager to come here."
Bread Loaf is the graduate school of English at Middlebury College in Vermont. It has four permanent summer campuses, including UAS. Students on the Juneau campus stay in UAS housing and eat their meals on campus.
In addition to offering classes during a three-week and a six-week summer session, Bread Loaf also presents a free, public lecture and reading series at Egan Library on the UAS Auke Lake campus. "It's one way for Bread Loaf to make connections with the Juneau community," Maddox said. "It's also a chance for our faculty to address a wider audience than their class."
Bread Loaf, working with local writers and actors, also produced a play, "Cuchulain's Fight with the Sea," that was performed at a temporary outdoor theater on the UAS campus. More than 450 people attended the three performances.
"Readings, lectures and presentations seem what should be going on in a graduate program," Maddox said. "Things outside the classroom that are also intellectually interesting."
"This summer went absolutely, wonderfully well," Maddox said.
"Our relationship with UAS gets stronger and stronger."
Tongass Alaska Girl Scouts just completed our five-day Day Camp for CBJ girls. The day camp happened because of many people. On behalf of Girl Scouts, board and staff, we tahnk:

To the United Methodist Eagle River Camp, for helping provide a great place for a camp experience.

The Forestry Department provided materials and a naturalist, Nita Nettleton, to teach us about our beautiful surroundings, and thanks to Vicki Parsons for the potting soil.
Thanks to Liberty and Kira from the Juneau Raptor Center who talked their handlers into bringing them to camp as a wonderful surprise for girls and adults.
To our countless volunteers who lent their time and talents this summer and throughout the year ... Maggie Stuimme, Leona Coleman, Susan Braley, Christine Wray, Barbara Rapp, Lynn Logan, Kris and Tara Kearns, Patricia Adams, Mildred Nelson, Vicky Scharen and Vickie Ryan. All of you are priceless.
