Ketchikan Indian Community recall petitions filed

Posted: Sunday, September 01, 2002

A group of dissatisfied Ketchikan Indian Community members have filed three recall petitions with the tribe in an attempt to remove Tribal Council members Marly Edenso, Sue Pickrell and Norman Arriola from office.

The petitions were filed with KIC Friday, Aug. 23, by a group of members known as We the People. The petitions charge the three council members with gross neglect of duty, said Michelle Benning, a member of We the People.

The Tribal Council on Saturday, Aug. 24, rejected a similar recall petition for Council President Charlie White. Interim general manager of KIC David Landis said that the petition did not give details to back up the charges against White, and that pages of the petition were inconsistent.

Landis would not comment on the three new petitions. He said the controversy surrounding the recall attempts had disrupted KIC and delayed everyday operations.

"If we can't get our business done, then we cease to function as an organization, and I won't allow that to happen," he said.

Pickrell, Edenso and Arriola were elected in January to two-year terms on the Tribal Council. White was elected in January to a one-year term as president.
