Four Sitka women participated in the Avon 3-day Breast Cancer Walk held in western Washington on Aug. 9-11.
MaryAnne Maxson, her daughters Kristi Coltharp and Darcy Michener, and Jocelyn Webb raised $12,000 to help fund breast cancer research and treatment. The team, with about 2,900 other walkers, then walked the 60 miles between Enumclaw, Wash., and Seattle.
The women said the walk, which took place during an oppressive heat wave, was a challenge.
"It was hard work," said Maxson, but she said it was worth it for the fund raiser. "I really feel strongly about the cause, the research that's necessary for breast cancer and the treatment of women," she said.
The group plans to participate in the event next year, and will attempt to raise even more money, they said.
