Juneau's May wins Prostate Cancer 5K Run

Posted: Monday, September 01, 2008

Saturday morning's Southeast Road Runner's Prostate Cancer 5K Run was Scott May's first chance to win one of Juneau's dozens of annual road races, and likely his last.

That's OK with the 44-year-old coach of Juneau-Douglas High's track and field team. May has been back on the competitive running wagon for roughly five years now. In the world of road racing, that means he's still shaking some of the cobwebs out of the sneakers that he temporarily retired after college.

A simultaneous high school cross country meet helped limit May's competition to just 20 other racers on a wind and rain-free morning that helped many runners post personal record times. Such factors have helped the coach from putting too much stock into his victory.

"It'll probably never happen again," May said. "I was just the best runner in Juneau who happened to be running in that race this year."

The 21 racers - 19 runners and two walkers - paid $5 apiece to take part in the event, which has taken place at Mendenhall River Community School for the past three years. The event's original start and finish line was at the Riverbend Elementary School, but the racers and spectators quickly outgrew the facility's available parking.

This year's official race director was Tom Thompson, who put in much of the work to make the event a success.

"Tom deserves all of the credit for making this thing go," event volunteer Shawn Miller said. "The race has been a real success as far as raising attention to the fact that cancer is out there and anyone can be affected by it. Some of Juneau's best master's runners have had it and beaten it. It's great for them to help everyone get additional information and learn more about it."

May's time of 19 minutes, 21 seconds helped him to easily top 60-year-old Bob Marshall and 30-year-old John Stearns who tied for second place by posting identical times of 20:22.

Bob Hopson, 45, took fourth place with a time of 20:28. Zane Clark, 47, rounded out the top five with a time of 20:33.
