Juneau enrollment shifts to new school

Posted: Tuesday, September 01, 2009

This school year, all four grades will be represented for the first time at Thunder Mountain High School. A full sports program also is offered for the first time at the school, which opened with only three grades and intramural sports last fall.

Thunder Mountain High School junior Karen Leder said Monday morning before her first class that she already could tell there were more students milling around the commons, and she expected larger classes as a result.

TMHS's enrollment numbers went up by 82 students this year to 551, according to enrollment data provided by the district on Friday.

Total enrollment in the Juneau School District went down to 4,939, from 5,030 at the start of the last school year. Student enrollment figures have fallen slightly each year for six years.

The district's highest enrollment in the past 20 years was in 1999, when there were about 5,701 students, according to the state Department of Education and Early Development.
