Trail Mix's latest projects

Posted: Sunday, September 02, 2001

As Trail Mix has grown, volunteers and others have done repairs and upkeep on the majority of Juneau's trails. In recent years, their efforts have resulted in a number of trail improvements and upgrades. Some examples are:

Volunteers and workers repaired a section of the Auk Nu Trail, installing turnpikes - logs laid parallel and filled in with gravel in place of broken planks.

Retaining logs, steps and other erosion-containing measures were added to the Mount Roberts Trail, as were several observation platforms just above the tram.

Past the shooting range on Montana Creek Road, Trail Mix worked with the Mendenhall Watershed Partnership to clear ditches and install new culverts. The measures prevented road erosion and stream pollution.

The washed-out Granite Creek bridge was rebuilt on Perseverance Trail. Trail Mix also constructed the new Bear Creek Trail to circumvent Granite Creek while the bridge was washed out. The group performs general maintenance on Perseverance.

The first 1,800 feet of a snowmachining trail on Lake Creek was graveled.

A 120-by-120-foot gravel parking lot was built at the end of Jackson Street on Blueberry Hill. The lot improves snowmachine access to the Dan Moller Trail via the Treadwell Ditch.

Trail Mix assisted an Eagle Scout in graveling about 2,500 feet of a neighborhood trail near Lund Street and Mountain Avenue in the Switzer Creek area.

A new trail geared toward commercial use was built near Outer Point. Public comments and recommendations by the Trails Working Group, an interagency committee organized by Trail Mix, prompted the project.

Extensive work has been done on part of the Treadwell Ditch between the Dan Moller Trail to the Eaglecrest Ski Area.

Fund-raising efforts have continued. Trail Mix will hold a fund-raising dinner and auction at the top of the Mount Roberts Tramway at 7 p.m. Sept. 15.
