Crimson Bears run wild

Girls sweep Homer and Seward Invites; boys win at Homer, third at Seward

Posted: Sunday, September 02, 2001

The Juneau-Douglas High School cross country teams ran away with the Homer Invitational on Friday, sweeping both team and individual victories. Heidi Denton ran her best race of the season in winning the three-kilometer girls race and Jesse Stringer won the 5K boys race for the Crimson Bears.

The Juneau girls continued their rampage on Saturday by winning the Seward Invitational and the boys placed a respectable third in a field of 13 schools.

Denton, the usual No. 3 girls runner this year, followed up her win at Homer with a team-leading fourth-place finish at Seward. Her time of 20:31.6 bested teammate Hilary Young, who placed fifth, by nearly five seconds at 20:35.5.

The Crimson Bear girls 43 points easily won the Seward Invitational, with Kenai placing second with 82. Grace Christian was third with 89 and Soldotna was fourth with 96.

Molly Krehlik and Greta Thibodeau finished eighth and 10th, respectively, to give the Crimson Bears four runners in the top 10. Brittany Rohm was close behind, placing 16th as Juneau's No. 5 runner and Phoebe Rohrbacher placed 25th.

Freshman Marci Mohler of Skyview dominated the girls race, winning in a time of 19:43.3, over 38 seconds faster than second-place Ari Goldstein of Soldotna (20:21.8).

In Friday's race at Homer, the Juneau girls fell just short of a perfect score of 15 with all five scorers placing in the top eight. Behind Denton, who won the short 3K race in 9:20.5, were teammates Young in third at 9:34.8, Krehlik in fourth at 9:45.2, Thibodeau in fifth at 9:48.6, and Rohm who placed eighth, but received seventh-place points at 10:00.2. Rohrbacher finished 19th at 10:54.3 as Juneau's No. 6 runner.

The Juneau girls' 20 points was a season low and was less than half that of second-place Kenai's 41 points. Homer placed third with 70 and Nikiski was a distant fourth with 111.

The boys squad also enjoyed a victory at Homer on Friday, but it wasn't as easy as the one by their female counterparts.

The Crimson Bear boys, led by Stringer's victory, overcame two top-five finishes by Anchorage Christian Schools to outscore them, 39-54, for the team victory. Kenai was third with 79 and Homer fourth with 84.

After Stringer won the race in 16:39.0, freshman Bryce Iverson continued his surprising season with a eighth-place finish in 17:31.2. Iverson led a pack of four straight Juneau runners -- with Brian Nowlin, Axel Thibodeau and Blake Rider -- who finished in eighth-, ninth-, 10th- and 11th-place, respectively. Phillip Dierking was 15th as the No. 6 runner for Juneau.

On Saturday, defending state champion Soldotna won easily. The Stars won behind an outstanding performance from Kyle McBride, who won in 16:47.4, and teammate Ben Histand, who took second in 17:02.6.

Stringer was Juneau's top runner and finished in the lead pack in fifth place, with a time of 17:13.6. Iverson continued to impress and was Juneau's No. 2 runner for the third straight race, finishing 14th in a strong field at 18:14.5.

Rider was next for Juneau in 18:35.8, good for 21st place and Nowlin and Thibodeau finished 24th and 25th while Phillip Dierking finished 33rd.

The junior varsity competed at Wrangell on Saturday, but no results were received at press time.
