First of all, I wish to thank the Juneau Empire for the thoughtful coverage given to the series of Native Education forums over the last three months. I was disappointed to read in your Aug. 29 edition that some have chosen to turn the forums into a racial issue.
The anonymous comments accompanying the Empire's Native charter school poll results only provide an opportunity for individuals to blow off misguided racial steam with impunity. Those who have been following efforts of the folks who have participated in the forums and the issues that they have articulated know that a charter school is only part of a variety of programs required to improve Native student achievement. Anyone familiar with the law knows that charter schools must be open to the public.
I thank all who have come forward to deal with the enormous educational challenges facing our (not just Native) community.
