To Mary (Lihou, Empire letter, Sept. 1) and the other pro-roaders, get real. Building a road to Skagway is such a bad idea, I can't believe people are actually serious about it. Wake up and smell the salmon.
In addition to harming a pristine environmental habitat, the road would cost millions, be unsafe and need constant upkeep because it would traverse one avalanche area after another. I, for one, do not want to spend all the money this region has for transportation to maintain a road that can only be used five months out of the year, if that.
And yes, Mary, I do plan on raising my children here and if we want to go on a road trip, we can take the ferry to Haines or Skagway and go from there. If you feel like you are "held hostage" in Juneau, then move.
