International Coastal Cleanup is set for Sept. 17

Posted: Friday, September 02, 2005

In 1986, an Ocean Conservancy employee rounded up nearly 3,000 people and spent a day removing 124 tons of debris from a Texas beach. Little did they know that this one cleanup would grow into a worldwide effort, the International Coastal Cleanup, which is now celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Today, the ICC is held around every major body of water in the world. Cumulatively, more than 5.8 million volunteers in more than 120 countries have picked up more than 100 million pounds of trash.

This year, the one-day event will be held Saturday, Sept. 17. In Juneau, events will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sandy Beach and Auke Village Recreation Area.

People can sign up as a group or individually and help for the entire event or just come by for an hour.
