Vote no on adding fluoride to Juneau's public water system.

What percentage of our public water passes over our teeth? Most of our water is used in flushing toilets, bathing, and washing dishes or laundry, where fluoride makes no difference.

Public water fluoridation delivers medication to every person, regardless of dental need or medical consequence. Most modern studies indicate that if fluoride has any beneficial effect it is from topical application, not from ingestion. Fluoride should be administered to target populations, in regulated doses by properly trained people. Our challenge is to find ways to apply fluoride directly on teeth in ways that are available and affordable to Juneau residents who need and want it, especially children.

Re-introducing sodium fluoride to the Juneau public water system is an old, broad-brush solution. It will keep us from finding and implementing the best ways of accomplishing improved dental health in Juneau.

I'll be voting NO fluoride on Oct. 2.
