ANCHORAGE - Federal officials have named Tim Towarak of Unalakleet to head the Federal Subsistence Board.
KTUU reports Towarak is currently co-chair of the Alaska Federation of Natives and will give up that position this fall for his new role. He also has been president of the Bering Straits Native Corporation for the past 11 years and has experience as a subsistence hunter himself.
Alaska Natives have complained they do not have enough say in federal subsistence decisions. A federal review of subsistence management is nearly complete.
Towarak favors federal management of fish and game on about 40 million acres of Native corporation lands now under state management.
