Defying the odds

Nearly 700 runners and walkers turn out to battle breast cancer

Posted: Sunday, September 03, 2000

It could accurately be said that the 145 women who turned out for Saturday's ninth annual Beat the Odds race were running for their lives.

Along with about 550 walkers, some 700 people showed up at Mendenhall Elementary River School on a beautifully sunny day to help raise awareness about women's breast cancer.

"There's no reason for any woman to go without her mammogram," said Dr. Maureen Longworth, addressing the runners just prior to the race. "We can decrease deaths by 23 percent by getting a mammogram starting at age 40. Let's beat the odds!"

Race director George Elgee said breast cancer does not discriminate.

"You realize how many people close to you are affected," Elgee said just after the start of the race, noting his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. "And it's not just genetics -- more women who have breast cancer don't have a history of breast cancer in their family."

The finish line of the 5-K race resembled something of a 1989 class reunion.

K.K. Magee and JoAnn Quigg finished in a dead-heat for first, clocking simultaneous times of 20 minutes, 24 seconds. Erin Mitchell was third in 21:09.

Quigg and Mitchell raced together on the Juneau-Douglas High School cross-country team; Magee competed against them at the same time as a runner for Ketchikan High School.

"I thought she'd be way ahead of me, I'm always looking at her tail," chuckled Magee, who bolted from the race shortly after the finish to get ready for her wedding Saturday afternoon.

In fact, officially, she is now K.K. Prussian.

"About a half-mile from the finish we decided to finish together," said Magee.

The former King harrier now lives in Anchorage, but she was married at the Shrine of St. Therese because she and her husband Aaron have lots of family and friends in the Capital City.

Quigg said she did everything in her power just to keep up with Magee.

"She's riding pretty high right now," Quigg said, referring to Magee's adrenaline flow with the wedding looming.

"We decided to finish together, but we ran it hard," said Quigg, who finished first for the second time in this race. "It's fun to see all the people out here."

The wins are nice, Quigg said, but educating people about breast cancer is the real reason for her participation.

"I've been very lucky," Quigg said, noting that her family has not been affected by breast cancer. "But, of course, I've known many women who have. It's a tough disease, but people are winning."

Mitchell said her training regimen over the past few years has been disrupted -- joyfully -- by her two children. She added that getting back into a regular training schedule over the past year or so has made running that much more enjoyable again.

"JoAnn and I run together once a week," she said. "It's different now, it's a lot more fun."

She said she's going to run next weekend in the Klondike Relay, and this was a good warmup.

"I've had a sore hamstring, but I pushed it today and it felt great," she said. "It was just a beautiful day."
