FAIRBANKS - Gov. Tony Knowles has agreed to appoint a new student to sit on the University of Alaska Board of Regents before his term ends Dec. 2.
Knowles last appointment, Joseph Hardenbrook, was among more than a dozen Knowles appointees to state boards the Republican-dominated Legislature refused to confirm. Republican lawmakers, confident their candidate will win the gubernatorial election in November, said the next governor should make those appointments.
At the request of student leaders, Knowles called for special elections at the university's three main campuses to select their choices for a representative to the university's policy-making body. Knowles directed the campuses to have completed elections and formed a list of candidates by Oct. 4. The next student's appointment would serve only through May.
