Hockey registration

The Juneau Adult Hockey Association is currently accepting registrations through Sept. 7 for the autumn season, which is from Sept. 28 to Dec. 15, at the Treadwell Arena.

JAHA is a nonprofit group dedicated to organizing recreational hockey for Juneau's adults at the Treadwell Arena. The Association is pleased to announce it will host women's introductory and co-ed hockey leagues. All leagues will be non-contact and open to all players 18 years or older, regardless of skill level. To register or receive an electronic registration form, call Christopher at 586-3232. Players who register after Sept. 7 will be charged a late fee.

Automotive certification

The University of Alaska Southeast's Automotive Technologies department has received certification from the National Automotive Technicians Educations Foundation and the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.

To achieve the NATEF and ASE certification, the department went through a major overhaul under the direction of the Automotive Technology Head, Tony Martin.

"The process by which NATEF certifies that we meet the very strict industry standards is a pretty rigorous exercise," said Martin.

"The fact that we are now an ASE training program is great, not only for the University, but the community as a whole. Students are assured of a quality education and shop owners are assured they're hiring a quality technician. It's a win-win situation."

"This is great news for automotive-minded young people and their parents in Southeast Alaska," said NATEF Board of Trustees Al Duebber.

"ASE certification programs increase cooperation between local education and industry leaders."

String art - a recipe for early learning

Young children all over Southeast Alaska have been busy making string art, dream-catchers, yarn dolls, and "webs of kindness," thanks to a generous donation by the Fred Meyer Foundation of $500 for much-needed activity supplies in early childhood programs.

Since most parents cannot afford the full cost of quality programs for young children, many programs have limited funds available for educational enrichment. Supplies provided by the Fred Meyer Foundation were distributed by NAEYC-SEA to early childhood programs along with "recipe" cards for activities related to workshops offered by the National Association for the Education of Young Children in Southeast Alaska.

The Foundation's community grant program is driven by 32 local Advisory Committees made up of local Fred Meyer employees who research nonprofit organizations and award community grants. These grants are the result of community efforts involving both employees and customers through the contributions they make in stores using the Make Change Count scan cards at the check-stands. The Fred Meyer Foundation has awarded grants totaling approximately 2.1 million since it began in December 1998. For more information, call (800) 858-9202 ext. 5605. Free activity recipe cards are available at www.naeycsea.org.
