Juneau-Douglas High School volleyball - The Crimson Bears host the Ketchikan Kings in a pair of season-opening Region V-Class 4A matches. Times are TBA, but the varsity matches are expected to start about 7 p.m. and JV matches about 5 p.m. each night at the Juneau-Douglas High School main gymnasium.

Sports trading card show - The next sports trading card show is from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Collector's Hideaway, off Willoughby near Alaskan & Proud. Local collectors will be showcasing their cards for buying, selling and viewing. Cards of 1999 Juneau-Douglas High School graduate Carlos Boozer, who will be a rookie with the Cleveland Cavaliers this year, will be available. Juneau Youth Football League parents' meeting - All parents of JYFL football players and cheerleaders need to attend a mandatory meeting, which will take place at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5, both at the Riverbend Elementary School Commons. This meeting will give parents a chance to ask questions about the league, get game schedules, give input to the JYFL Board and find out what's in store for your kids this season. Juneau Soccer Club/Alaska State Youth Soccer Association coaching clinics - The JSC and ASYSA will co-host two clinics in September to help local adults earn their coaching licenses. The state "E" level course takes place from Sept. 3-12 and is the entry-level course in the U.S. Soccer Association's coaching curriculum. The fee for the "E" license is $100. Mount Jumbo Gym rentals - The Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation will take reservations for rentals of the Mount Jumbo Gymnasium starting on Monday, Aug. 12. The gym is open for rentals beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 3. The cost is $27 per hour. The Mount Jumbo Gym is also open for preschool open gyms starting on Tuesday, Sept. 3. Preschool open gyms take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and they are open for children age 6 and younger. The preschool open gyms are free and parents need to stay at the gym with their children at all times. The Terry Miller Gym is currently open and available for rent. Youth open gym - Meet from 8-11 p.m. on Saturdays (Sept. 7, 14, 21, 28) at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School gym. Friday youth open gyms at Floyd Dryden Middle School are on hiatus until October.
