School: Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School.
Art of choice: Violin.
Experience: He has played violin since he was 6 years old, sometimes studying under local violinists such as Lisa Miles and Steve Tada. This summer, he attended the Oregon Suzuki Institute.
Recent work: Seid recently competed in the Juneau Symphony Concerto Competition, winning first place in the junior division. This earns him a solo performance in the Juneau Student Symphony Concert Nov. 15 and 16 at the Juneau Arts & Culture Center.
Inspiration: He said he started playing music because of an old family friend, Stephen Hovik. "I wanted to be like him."
All in the family: His dad plays cello, his mother plays guitar and his brother plays the violin but is switching to piano.
Favorite artists: The books of author Anthony Horowitz appeal to Seid's adventurous nature. When asked about his favorite music, he said he likes composers Bach and Vivaldi. "I also like rock (AC/DC) and metal." His favorite metal band is Disturbed.
Activites: He enjoys listening to music, reading or being a student in school. "I play hockey and soccer. ... Hockey is my favorite thing!" He's a big fan of Pavel Datsuyk of the Detroit Red Rings, a Russian-born hockey player with a reputation for his humble demeanor, and flashy moves on the ice.
Future plans: Seid knows he wants to go to college, but he doesn't have any specific plans yet.
His band teacher John Unzicker says: "Not only is Ethan a gifted musician, but he obviously has worked very hard to play at such a high level.
Ethan is also humble, respectful and willing to do whatever is necessary to benefit the whole class. Most people (including adults) that play as well as he does, have some sort of ego to go along with it, not Ethan."
