... for camp support

Tongass Alaska Girl Scouts just completed our five-day Day Camp for CBJ girls. The day camp happened because of many people. On behalf of Girl Scouts, board and staff, we thank:

First of all, a big thanks for the CBJ Youth Activities Grant. In partnership with Girl Scouts, we were able to serve 65 girls.

To the United Methodist Eagle River Camp, for helping provide a great place for a camp experience.

To Gastineau School, JDHS, Big K and Carrs, we appreciate the morning and afternoon use of your parking lots for camp bus service.

The Forestry Department provided materials and a naturalist, Nita Nettleton, to teach us about our beautiful surroundings, and thanks to Vicki Parsons for the potting soil.

Thanks to Liberty and Kira from the Juneau Raptor Center who talked their handlers into bringing them to camp as a wonderful surprise for girls and adults.

To our countless volunteers who lent their time and talents this summer and throughout the year . . . Maggie Stuimme, Leona Coleman, Susan Braley, Christine Wray, Barbara Rapp, Lynn Logan, Kris and Tara Kearns, Patricia Adams, Mildred Nelson, Vicky Scharen and Vickie Ryan. All of you are priceless.

Finally, a huge thanks to the great team at Grayline-Holland America Westours. We could not have done it without you.

...for fund-raiser

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Juneau would like to thank everyone who made a contribution to our most successful Salmon Bake fund-raiser ever. We'd like to start by thanking Jeff Keys and Alaska Travel Adventures, John Vallejo and all of the staff at Gold Creek Salmon Bake for their hard work. We'd also like to thank the following individuals and businesses: KINY/KSUP radio for their generous publicity; Ron Lance at United Airlines for two United Airlines tickets; Bruce Barker at Goldbelt for season passes for the Mount Robert Tramway; John Scheerens at Alaska Discovery for putting together a Gustavus getaway weekend, including Auk Nu Ferry, Fairweather Golf, Annie Mae Lodge, and Alaska Discovery Bed & Breakfast and Day Kayaking; Gene Chilton at Totemic Treasures for a beautiful handmade bracelet; Ron Valentine at World Explorer Cruises for a dinner certificate; Bob Engelbrecht at Northstar Trekking for a Glacier Trek certificate; Dean C. Brown at Princess Tours for a lunch certificate; a beautiful dolphin painting by Jessie Crites; and to door prize donors Adventure Sports, Chan's Thai Kitchen, Pizza Hut/Kentucky Fried Chicken, Alaska Travel Adventures, Hearthside Books and Jillian Clark. Thanks to Children of All Nations for their wonderful performance again this year, Lady Jane Mulready for her auctioneering and Karen Lechner for her help in making this a great event.

We also thank the following dessert chefs: Kristin Whitehead, Peggy Hunnings, Amanda Nazer, Faye Peters, Karl Ohls and Karen Lechner.

... for maintenance assistance

On behalf of our staff and the senior citizens of Juneau, we would like to publicly thank the members of the Juneau-Gastineau Rotary Club for the maintenance assistance they've provided this year. Some of the Rotary members conducted home repair for senior clients, while others helped keep the Valley Senior Center in good physical condition.

A few of the Rotary Club members deserve special recognition: Robert Minch and Carl Ferlauto helped build wheelchair ramps for clients of our Care Coordination Program. By volunteering their time, they have made it possible for people to continue to live safely in their own homes. Member Kevin Ritchie takes care of the Valley Senior Center facility as a volunteer, replacing the fluorescent lights as needed and anticipating work needed to protect the building from age and weather. This year, he took the initiative to remove the moss and other debris from the roof of the Valley Senior Center. His thoughtfulness will help preserve the Senior Center so that senior citizens may enjoy the facility for years to come.

Juneau is fortunate to have Rotarian volunteers who so graciously donate their time and skills to improving our community.
