Word of Mouth

Posted: Wednesday, September 06, 2000

Word of Mouth gives readers a forum to express opinions on a variety of issues by telephone. Calls must be limited to one minute and we reserve the right to edit calls for clarity, length and libel. Calls will remain anonymous, and opinions will be published if they meet the editor's standards of good taste. The number to call is 586-4636. Then press 8255 to leave your message. (As you've probably figured out, messages printed here don't necessarily reflect the opinion of the Empire.)

The lines are still out the door of the downtown post office.

The children who were seen carrying guns at the bird refuge bought ammunition that was taxed for wildlife habitat restoration.

Duck hunting is not entertainment, it is being a natural animal, which we are.

The black bear that was shot and killed in the Blueberry Hills neighborhood was a glacier bear, a rare blue-gray color phase of the black bear. Leaving out garbage was a death warrant for this bear. Even if someone is fined they will pay a far lower price than this bear did.

We need a better response to bear calls by the JPD. It sounds like the officer panicked.

Bear-proof trash receptacles and Dumpsters should be standing operating procedure as they are in some other towns.

The speed bumps on Riverside Drive are intended to slow you down. Don't go over them fast and you won't ruin your suspension. Second, the Pledge of Allegiance is to the flag of the United States of America. You shouldn't be upset that you have to stand. Third, the high school senior's complaints about changes this year are valid. I don't know why the administration is going to such an extent as to stop something as harmless as wearing a T-shirt.

To the person who complained about the speed bumps on Riverside Drive, perhaps you should slow down.

I heard there is a possible serial killer in Anchorage. I just wanted to bring that up as a point to those who are for the road. Being a life-long Juneau resident, that's scary to me. We might be bringing in a lot more serial killers and drug users and warlords if it is easier to access Juneau. It's better if the only way in or out is by plane or ferry. Thank goodness we have a pretty good monitor of who travels by plane and by ferry.

I find is amazing that Word of Mouth exists. It pits anonymous whiner against anonymous whiner. Word of Mouth is completely ineffective in solving problems.

To the senior to commented in Word of Mouth, school is for learning, it is not to ridicule, harass or haze freshmen. Throwing a student in a trash can is an assault. Let our children go to school without being afraid.

Gas prices here are an outrage.

Thanks to all the great kids at the free car wash last weekend at the Mendenhall Mall and the Auke Bay Bible Church youth group.

As we require tour buses to shut off their engines at all their stops, I'd like to suggest that school buses also do so while sitting in front of the high school. For the houses across the street, it's not good to have five or six or seven buses sitting there idling while they're waiting to pick kids up.

There is an unexpected gift coming to us along with these days of heavy overcast and downpour. It is the ability to hear only the natural sounds of wind and rain coming from the sky.

I wish our cable company would carry more NFL games.
