Obituary
Juneau resident Mark D. Miles, 51, died suddenly on Aug. 29, 2006, while on a business trip in San Diego.

He obtained a degree from hydrology at Colorado State University in 1979 and a master's degree in civil engineering with an emphasis in river hydraulics and Northern hydrology from University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1985. He worked in hydrology and hydraulics for 24 years, including 20 years in the Alaska Department of Transportation working in the Bridge Division. He was the statewide hydraulic engineer and was active nationally with various working committees, including TRB Committee for Hydrology, Hydraulics and Water Quality and the ASHTO Task Force on Hydrology and Hydraulics. He was also a panel member of several NCHRP projects and was past chair and vice chair of the Interagency Hydrology Committee of Alaska. He was a registered professional engineer in Alaska.
Family members said he enjoyed many outdoor activities, including boating, hiking, skiing and fishing, and was deeply devoted at the Juneau Church of the Nazarene, where he enjoyed singing in the choir.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Kramar Miles; two children, Kim and Andy Miles; parents, Paul and Carol Miles, of Scituate, Mass.; sisters, Deborah Miles Prentice and her husband, Steve, of Norwell, Mass., and Amy MacDonald and her husband, Rod, of East Hampton, Conn.; and his mother in-law, Frances Kramar and her five brothers and sisters.
Public visitation will be at 4-6 p.m. on Sept. 7 at the Alaskan Memorial Park, 3839 Riverside Drive. A memorial service will be at 5 p.m. on Sept. 8 at St. Paul's Catholic Church. The graveside service will be private.
