JUNEAU - "Discovering Your Creative Self," an adult class connecting art and spirituality, beginning Sept. 15, will explore Julia Cameron's book, "Walking in this World: The Practical Art of Creativity."
"This is the 'next step' sequel to international best-seller 'The Artist's Way' in 'discovering and recovering the creative self,'" said class instructor Judy Shook. "Allow yourself 'to pursue the Pied Piper of delight' with new strategies and techniques for breaking through difficult creative ground."
The class will meet Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at 3228 Tongass Blvd. The first night, Sept. 15, is an introduction. Beginning Sept. 22, this will be a closed group limited to 20 adults. The cost for the 13 sessions is $50. Work study scholarships are available. Reading 'The Artist's Way' is not required.
The class will be lead by Aldersgate United Methodist Churh pastor Judy Shook, who studied with Matthew Fox, a ground-breaking theologian, along with others who use art as meditation. Shook has lead three Artist's Way groups, Art 'n' Soul retreats and taught various classes using art as spiritual practice. She has published poetry and other creative writings, led various forms of dance including Interplay and Sacred Dance. Shook has done ceramic sculpting and other pottery since 1989. She completed a Masters of Creation Spirituality and has been involved in creative arts in worship and throughout her ministry.
Co-leader, Karen Wilke, is one of Shook's students. Wilke spent several years teaching classes for the Juneau Small Business Development Center, including collaborating with the local arts businesses to bring a day-long seminar, "Creativity, an Unexpected Business Tool," to the community. She continues to explore ways to incorporate art into day to day life.
"Come explore where the longings of your soul are met by the beauty of creation, the song of your heart is met in the celebration of community, the questions of your mind are met with the wonders of the universe, the passions of your life meet the needs of the world," Shook said.
Copies of "Walking in This World: The Practical Art of Creativity," by Juila Cameron, are available at both Hearthside Books as well as through the group, with no shipping charges and a 20-percent discount. To register or for more information, call Judy Shook at 523-2914.
