Governor appoints local woman to council

JUNEAU - Gov. Sean Parnell has appointed Velja Elstad of Juneau to the Governor's Council on Disabilities and Special Education.

Elstad is a community rehabilitation specialist with the state Division of Vocational Rehabilitation since 1998, and has worked in other capacities for the division and for REACH, Inc., since 1983. She has a bachelor's degree in psychology from Western Washington University.

The committee advises the state on ways to provide assistive technology and services, helps secure federal vocational rehabilitation funds and creates statewide interest in employment and rehabilitation of people with disabilities.
