Top, Juneau Raptor Center volunteer Sam Buck, 12, releases Natasha, a merlin falcon, at the overflow bus parking at the Mendenhall Glacier on Saturday. Natasha was found on the side of the road in Haines about two months ago and brought to the center. She and Boris, another female merlin falcon who was hit by a vehicle in Douglas, were released together by Buck and fellow volunteer Austin Moline. Bottom, Natasha lights on a branch to get her bearings after being released. Merlins are small members of the falcon family, measuring 12 inches tall and with a wingspan of 2 feet.
