• Women's indoor classic soccer league - The registration deadline for this no-experience-required league for women is Thursday, Sept. 16, and play starts on Monday, Sept. 20. Older women and new players are welcome to this league, which is sponsored by the Capital City Soccer League and has games at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Monday nights at the Mount Jumbo Gym in Douglas. The cost to join this league is $30 and forms are available at the Zach Gordon Youth Center or on the Web at http://www.juneausoccer.com. Late registrations will be accepted if space is available. Thursday, Sept. 9
• Meet U.S. Olympic basketball team member Carlos Boozer - A 1999 Juneau-Douglas High School graduate and a power forward for the Utah Jazz, Boozer will be in town making a guest appearance from 12:30-4 p.m. at the Carr's/Safeway store. Boozer will be autographing complimentary t-shirts, mini-basketballs and custom posters featuring Boozer and former Cleveland Cavalier guard Trajan Langdon of Anchorage. He also will be giving away books to kids as part of the Reading is Fundamental program. Sprite sodas in custom cans featuring Boozer also will be available, as well as $1 hot dogs and Coke products (proceeds will go to a local non-profit charity in Juneau, but the promoters have yet to announce which program).

• Juneau Youth Football League - Pee-Wee Division: Rams vs. Titans, 6 p.m. Senior Division: Hurricanes vs. Bruins, 8 p.m. All games at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park.
Saturday, Sept. 11
• Juneau-Douglas High School football - The Crimson Bears host the Rainier Beach Vikings in a nonconference game at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park. The varsity game is at 8 p.m. and the junior varsity game is at 5 p.m. Rainier Beach is a Class 3A school in the Seattle area and the Vikings were ranked third in the Seattle Times preseason poll for Washington's Class 3A teams.

• Juneau-Douglas High School tennis team - The JDHS tennis team is recruiting players for its second season. Students will all levels of tennis experience are welcome to participate. Practices are held at JRC/The Alaska Club's Mendenhall Valley location on weekdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The season has just started and will last through mid-October. Info: John McConnochie, 723-1876.
• Juneau Alpine Club monthly meeting - Meet at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 7, at the downtown library meeting room, located above the parking garage at the Juneau Library's downtown location. Info: Don Larsen, 789-2036.
• Glacier Swim Club season begins - The fall season for this club youth swimming program for ages 6-18 begins Tuesday, Sept. 7, at the Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool. Returning swimmers should check the GSC bulletin board in the pool lobby or the team's Web site, http://www.gsc-swim.org, for practice schedules. Registration for new swimmers takes place from 8-10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Juneau-Douglas High School commons area, with tryouts for new swimmers from 8-9 a.m. on Sept. 11 at the pool. New swimmers should contact assistant coach Kathie Millhorn to schedule a tryout. New head coach Scott Griffith, who is moving to Juneau from Waynesboro, Va., where he coached the Shenandoah Marlins Aquatic Club, is expected to arrive in mid- to late-September to take over the club. • JRC/The Alaska Club fall raquetball league season begins - The registration deadline for the fall season is Friday, Sept. 10, at the Mendenhall Valley location of JRC/The Alaska Club. League matches take place at 5:30 p.m., 6:15 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday nights from Sept. 14 to Oct. 12. League costs are $25 plus tax for JRC/The Alaska Club members and $30 plus tax for non-members. Info: Eileen Wilson, 789-2181.
• Juneau Douglas Ice Association - Registration for the youth hockey program for ages 5-18 and for the age 4-5 introduction to hockey program take place from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Mendenhall Mall. • Hunter education course - This course takes place from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17, and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18, at the Juneau Gun Club shooting range on Montana Creek Road. All people participating in the course need to pick up a packet of study materials (cost $10) from the Douglas office of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Room 210. This course covers firearms safety and gun handling, wildlife conservation and management, game laws and regulations, hunter ethics and hunter responsibility. It is recommended for all hunters in the Juneau area, and it is required for all hunters younger than 16 years old who want to hunt waterfowl without adult supervision on the Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge. • Augustus Brown Pool/American Red Cross Lifeguard instructor class - A lifeguard instructor class will be held Thursday-Sunday, Oct. 28-31, open to those 17-older with a current Fundamental of Instructor Training certificate. Participants must pass a pre-course written and skills test that will be held on Saturday, Oct. 9, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The test will include demonstrations of CPR, first aid and lifeguarding skills. • Note to waterfowl hunters - Hunters seeking waterfowl hunting permits to take waterfowl, snipe or cranes on the Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge can obtain the permits at Western Auto, Rayco Sales or at the Douglas office of the Alaska Department of Fish & Game. The permit is meant as an orientation for hunters using the refuge and also allows ADF&G to collect duck hunting effort and harvest data. • Youth open gyms - Meet from 8-11 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School gym. Youth open gyms are free for students in grades 5-12. Info: Community schools director Joyce Kitka, 463-1700, Ext. 327.
• Adult volleyball/basketball open gyms - Basketball and volleyball open gyms for adults will take place from 7-9 p.m. starting on Friday, Aug. 27, at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. The cost is $5 per session and participants should bring their own volleyballs or basketballs. Ten-session punchcards are available for $40 each and are available from the Juneau Community Schools office or from the gym supervisor. Info: Juneau Community Schools, 463-1717.
• Mount Jumbo preschool open gym - Preschool open gyms for children ages 1-6 and an adult parent or caregiver take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays starting on Tuesday, Sept. 7, and running through April. There must be at least one adult present for every four kids. There is a $1 per child fee, or punchcards for $10 and $50 can be bought at the gym, which is located at 909 4th Street in Douglas. Tricycles, mats, balls, a Little Tykes climber, building blocks and a kid-sized basketball hoop are available. • Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - New climbing wall hours are 5-7 p.m. on Mondays, and 3:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. • Basketball/volleyball court rentals available - The Juneau Community Schools program has basketball/volleyball court rental times available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. • Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center guided hikes - The Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center offers twice-daily, one-hour guided hikes on the Trail of Time. The free hikes, led by a naturalist from the visitor center, meet at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the flagpoles in the first parking lot. Info: Wayne Ward, 789-6640.
• Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
