Property owner comes up with new plan

KETCHIKAN - A waterfront property owner has applied for a federal permit to install a pier and a floating dock as part of a larger development in Herring Bay.

Ron Fitzgerald owns a sizable amount of property on Herring Bay. The property is zoned for heavy industrial, and is on the town side of the bay.

Fitzgerald wants to turn a shop building on the property into a lodge or hotel with eight units.

In 2006, Fitzgerald sought a permit to build two 40-foot-by-80-foot buildings on pilings on the tidelands for residential condominiums. That project ran into permitting and zoning issues.
