Pig's 11 newborns draw crowd at fair

Posted: Monday, September 07, 2009

ANCHORAGE - A young mother gave birth at the Alaska State Fair and became a star attraction.

Miss Piggy, a 17-month old, 950-pound porker, gave birth to 11 piglets.

The young sow was drawing crowds Friday night as word spread that the births were pending. She had a due date of Sept. 1 and was three days late.

Miss Piggy apparently wanted a private room to give birth. The first-time mom went into labor at 11 p.m. Friday, an hour after the fair barn closed, and had the last of the 11 piglets at 3 a.m. Saturday.

Owner Peggy Downing and her children were on hand for the event.

Today is the last day of the fair.
