Living and growing

Prayer, sale are chance to help Habitat for Humanity

There's not a more exciting time to be alive than right now! Yesterday is great for memories and lessons. Tomorrow is great for dreaming and planning. But right now is the time to live.

To live in faith is to recognize that God has given us this life as a gift, that this life is precious and that God wants us to live life fully, receiving and giving, not just taking, but also giving generously.

Living a life of faith means sharing life so that others might live and so others will know how great God is. My Christian faith teaches me that the more I give, the more I receive; the more I give up, the more I get back. It's called God's arithmetic.

The week of Sept. 17 the people of Juneau have an opportunity to do just that -- to share, to give, to offer up, to sacrifice. Many churches and places of worship will be celebrating a day of prayer for Habitat for Humanity, the international group whose mission is to create and build affordable housing around the world. Sept. 17 is the end of what's called "Building on Faith" week.

I want to invite you to join me in prayer for the people in need of affordable housing and for how God may be calling you to be part of building a house. The projects in Juneau are in need of prayer, money and people willing to serve in a variety of capacities, including fund-raising and coordinating volunteers, as well as hammering and painting.

The Greater Juneau Area Habitat For Humanity is sponsoring a garage sale at Aldersgate United Methodist Church on Cinema Drive Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. If you would like to donate items for the sale , you may drop them off at the church from 6 to 8 p.m. today.

For more information on how you can support Habitat for Humanity check out the local Web site at, or the national site at, or call the local number at 789-1417.

Greg Lindsay is the pastor at Northern Light United Church.
