Political newcomers make election exciting

Posted: Friday, September 08, 2000

As a "young" Alaskan (28 exactly, is that still young?), I am excited by political newcomers, Maridon Boario and Marc Wheeler. For the first time I am following local politics. I especially admire Boario's pledge to spend no more than $2,500 on her campaign. I share her conviction that too much money in local politics undermines participation and often excludes young people. While Mr. Koelsch feels that "young people don't have the financial means to get out of Juneau," I find it is more within my means ($28 one-way ferry to the road connection in Haines) to get out of Juneau, than to spend "as much as it takes" to win a seat on the assembly.
