Word of Mouth gives readers a forum to express opinions on a variety of issues by telephone. Calls must be limited to one minute and we reserve the right to edit calls for clarity, length and libel. The number to call in 586-4636. Then press 8255 to leave your message.

I am so glad that people are finally getting the message that garbage kills bears.

Where does the life-long Juneau resident think the prisoners at the maximum security prison at Lemon Creek go when they are released? They are not sent back to their communities. We don't have to worry that the drug users might use a road to come to Juneau they're already here. Does anyone believe people on the planes and ferries are monitored to be sure they are the right kind of people and not serial killers and drug users who might get off in Juneau?

The idea that a road out of town would cost less money than flying or taking a ferry is ridiculous when you consider the price of gas right now and the tolls that would have to be charged for a road.

The bears don't have enough berries to eat. The bears are starving for their blueberries. That's why they are in people's home and in the garbage.

Maybe one solution to the bear problem is actually picking up the garbage more than once a week.

Regarding a serial killer in Anchorage and what a road might bring to Juneau, I would remind the caller that when the people were murdered in the Mendenhall Valley, the murderers came off the ferry and walked into the house.

I can't believe my child was made to go outside Harborview Elementary School in the middle of a gale storm to do a fire drill practice. This does not seem very reasonable, especially when kids can't grab their jackets.

What's distasteful about a $5 head tax at the cruise port? I just paid $32 head tax at the airport on a $300 airline ticket.

The Alaska State Museum has some wonderful things for children, including a replica of Capt. Cook's ships.

Why is the city and borough still paving people's driveways?

Regarding boys hunting in the wetlands, one does not hunt to kill, one kills to have hunted. When a person hunts, they are part of their environment. To view or take pictures of wildlife, you are only a spectator. That's OK, but I prefer to watch movies rather than try to act in them.

Prayer doesn't belong in school. I agree with the Pledge of Allegiance but the words "one nation under God" were put in 1954. So it is a prayer.

Everyone should say the Pledge of Allegiance students and teachers. Better yet, this district should teach students why we should respect the flag, the freedoms it represents, and honor those who fought and died for it. Freedom is not free; many paid a high price.

To the freshman who was traumatized last Friday night at the football game with the duct tape: Our hearts go out to you. To the two seniors that we consider to be predators in our community: You need to be caught.

I think Word of Mouth is great. I don't think the people who call are whiners. If you've got an opinion, you're not whining, you're participating.

I like Word of Mouth because it gives a person who doesn't have the time or the energy to write a letter a chance to express their opinion.

Your Sunday cartoonist TOE never ceases to crack me up. His cartoon with Tony and his monument was hilarious.
