Beavers moved from Tanana River levees

FAIRBANKS - Work crews have relocated scores of beavers from the Tanana River levee system.

The public works director for the Fairbanks North Star Borough, Scott Johnson, says government workers this summer discovered 39 beaver dams in 15 miles of drainage channels linked to the levee.

Johnson says the borough spent nearly $60,000 moving beavers and cleaning the channels. It's part of the work with the Corps of Engineers to renew the levee's federal certification.
