Empire searching for citizen editorial board member

Posted: Wednesday, September 09, 2009

The Juneau Empire is looking for an informed, impartial member of the Juneau community to join its editorial board as the newspaper decides candidate endorsements for the October municipal elections.

The citizen editorial board member will hold an equal vote in the endorsement process. Other Empire editorial board members include interim Publisher Ronnie Hughes, Managing Editor Charles L. Westmoreland and Deputy Managing Editor Jill Homer.

Hughes said inviting a Juneau resident onto the board would help the public understand "a process that goes on behind closed doors and remains somewhat a mystery among our readers."

"The editorial board can certainly benefit from the knowledge and experience a member of the community would bring to the selection process," he said.

Candidates must be Juneau residents, knowledgeable about local city and education issues and able to attend all scheduled editorial board meetings. Interviews with candidates are being scheduled Sept. 14-17 and Sept. 21 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Candidate endorsements will run in the paper starting Sept. 30. Those interested also should not have any conflicts of interest with candidates running for office. A citizen editorial board member will be chosen by Thursday, Sept. 10.

To apply send your name, contact information, occupation, group affiliations, length of residency in Juneau and a paragraph about yourself to editor@juneauempire.com.
