ANCHORAGE - Gov. Sean Parnell has ordered state flags lowered Thursday to honor former state Sen. Kay Poland, who died in Anchorage last week.

Poland was 90.

She was appointed to the Senate on March 6, 1970, to fill the vacancy left by her husband during the Sixth Alaska Legislature.

She served in the Senate until 1979, representing the Kodiak-Aleutian District.

In 1978, Poland was an unsuccessful candidate for lieutenant governor.

She later was appointed director of commercial fisheries.

Poland is survived by her husband, George Silides, a son and two daughters.
