It's not a technical exercise

I was perplexed by John B. d'Armand, DMA's (?) letter criticizing a high school English teacher for the grammatically incorrect placement of the word "only" in a letter to the editor. Is he trying to impress us with his intellect, or is there a more mean-spirited intent? If clarity of thought and purpose is a hallmark of good writing, Mr. d'Armand DMA's letter falls short. I, for one, am glad we have teachers, not technicians, helping our children appreciate the beauty and power of the English language.
