English as second language

SERRC Valley Adult Education Center is offering English as a Second Language classes and GED preparation along with job placement assistance. These services are free to the public and open for anyone to attend. Classes started Sept. 2.

ESL classes are from 10 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday, and GED classes are 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday at the Valley Education Center at St. Vincent de Paul, on Teal Street behind the Nugget Mall. For more information, call 789-4622.

Wilderness first-aid course

The American Red Cross is offering a Wilderness First Aid Basics course 6 to 10 p.m. on Sept. 10 and 11, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 13, at the Red Cross office, 3200 Hospital Drive, No. 203. This is a 16-hour course designed to teach the response steps for treatment of injuries and illnesses in a situation where help is delayed. For course cost and to register, please call 463-5713.

Hope of the World conference

The Valley Chapel invites the public to join it at H.O.W. 2003, "Hope Of the World" Missions Conference from Sept. 11 to 14. Guest speakers will include the Rev. and Mrs. Cassidy, and Jody Farrell. There will be morning services, afternoon workshops and evening services covering a variety of topics, including "Women in Missions," "Finding Your Destiny," "The Promise of Revival," "The Price of Revival" and "Mobilizing for Revival." Juneau Public Library party

The Juneau Public Library has scheduled a Pizza and Shelf Reading Party from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12. Bullwinkle's and Domino's will supply the pizza, and the library will have books available to be put in order and shelved. Children under 12 years are discouraged to attend. If you plan to attend, call 586-5249, so there will be enough pizza.

Community Schools court rentals

Community Schools announces adult court rentals starting on Saturday, Sept. 13. Courts are available on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. Cost for the court rental is $20 an hour and must be paid at the time of reservation. This is an adult-only activity. To reserve a court, call Community Schools at 463-1717.

Annual salmon bake dinner, auction

Big Brothers Big Sisters will host its Annual Salmon Bake Dinner and Auction from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19, at the Gold Creek Salmon Bake. Tickets are available now at Big Brothers Big Sisters and Hearthside Books. Call 586-3350 for more information.

Lifeguard training courses

The Augustus Brown Pool and the American Red Cross are co-sponsoring lifeguard instructor and lifeguard training courses.

Lifeguard instructor courses begin with a pre-course test which will be administered from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20. Participants must be at least 17 years of age by the completion of the course, pass pre-course written and skills tests, and possess a current Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT) or American Red Cross Health and Safety Services Instructor Certificate. The lifeguard instructor course starts on Sept. 24 and ends on Oct. 12, meeting a total of seven times. Registration is $39.38, and materials and certification cost $51.

The mandatory pre-course session for lifeguard training is at 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15. Participants must be at least 15 years old before the end of the course, and they must be able to pass a swim test prior to enrolling. The lifeguard training course starts on Oct. 27 and ends Nov. 25, meeting a total of nine times. Registration is $52.50, and materials and certification cost is $50.95.
