Search continues for missing Sitka man

Posted: Wednesday, September 10, 2008

JUNEAU - A search has turned up no sign of a 41-year-old Sitka man missing since Sunday.

The Coast Guard, Alaska State Troopers and volunteer groups on Monday scoured Baranof Island looking for Chuck Thompson.

Thompson had been staying at a U.S Forest Service cabin at Seven Fathoms Bay. He planned to return Sunday morning.

An airplane Sunday night spotted Thompson's 16-foot skiff on rocks near Yamani Islet.

The Coast Guard said the skiff's running lights were on, the engine key was in the "ON" position, and the throttle was in the clutch-ahead position.

The vessel's GPS unit indicated the skiff had exited Necker Bay, then made tight circles before drifting aground.

The search is focused on an area 16 miles south of Sitka.
