Juneau airport closed for day; local federal offices implement emergency policies

Posted: Tuesday, September 11, 2001

No flights are traveling to or from the Juneau Airport today.

Also due to the terrorist attacks on the East Coast, Juneau's Federal Building is open only to federal employees today. Schools are open.

Sheela McLean of the U.S. Forest Service, headquartered in the building, said federal employees are undergoing a full security check as they enter. But others are not allowed.

The Juneau Post Office is closed to all.

Liberal leave policy is in effect for federal employees and those not essential to operations may stay home.

"While officials do not consider Juneau a high-risk area for a terrorist attack, these measures are taken as precautions and in recognition of what has happened on the East Coast," McLean said in a press release.
